What is a dental crown?
A crown (sometimes called a "cap") is a custom-made restoration that covers the entire visible part of a damaged tooth. It restores the tooth's original shape, size, strength, and appearance — and it protects what's left of the natural tooth underneath. Crowns are the standard of care after a root canal, for a tooth with a large failing filling, or for a tooth that's cracked, broken, or severely worn.
When you need a crown

What to expect
Visit 1 (about 60 minutes): Dr. Luba shapes the tooth, takes a digital scan or impression, and places a temporary crown. You leave with a fully functional tooth — just don't eat sticky foods on that side for a couple weeks.
Visit 2 (about 30 minutes, 2–3 weeks later): Your permanent crown arrives from the lab. Dr. Luba checks the fit, bite, and shade, cements it in place, and polishes it. You're done — and the crown should look indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

Materials we use
Dr. Luba uses high-grade all-porcelain or zirconia crowns for most patients — they're metal-free, biocompatible, and the most lifelike option. For back molars with heavy bite forces, she sometimes recommends a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown for extra strength. She'll walk you through the choice at your consult.
Cost & insurance
Most PPO plans cover crowns at 50–80% after a small deductible. Our cash fee is $1,295–$1,650 per crown, including the temporary. We submit your insurance for you and only collect your estimated portion at the visit.
