When a tooth needs to come out
We always try to save a natural tooth first. But sometimes an extraction is the healthiest option — when a tooth is too damaged to restore, when advanced gum disease has loosened it, when wisdom teeth are impacted or causing problems, or to make room for orthodontics.
Common reasons for extraction
- Tooth too decayed or broken to restore with a crown or filling
- Advanced gum disease with severe bone loss
- Impacted or infected wisdom teeth
- Failed root canal
- Extra teeth blocking other teeth from coming in
- Orthodontic preparation (making room)
What to expect
Simple extraction (15–20 min): Local anesthetic, gentle loosening with an elevator, then the tooth is lifted out with forceps. You feel pressure but no pain.
Surgical extraction (30–45 min): For impacted wisdom teeth or teeth that have broken off at the gumline. Dr. Luba makes a small incision, sometimes removes a bit of bone, then sections the tooth for easier removal. Stitches dissolve in 5–7 days.
Sedation options: Nervous? We offer oral sedation (a small pill you take before your visit) and nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") for an additional fee. Just let us know when you book.
Aftercare
- Bite on gauze for 30–45 minutes to stop bleeding
- Ice pack 20 min on / 20 min off for the first 24 hours
- Soft foods (yogurt, soup, smoothies) for 2–3 days
- Don't smoke, drink through a straw, or spit forcefully for 72 hours
- Rinse gently with warm salt water starting day 2
- Pain: usually manageable with over-the-counter ibuprofen + acetaminophen
